Entrepreneur Writers

Bill Waterson once made Calvin say : " Art is dead! there's nothing left to say . Style is exhausted and content is pointless . Art has no purpose . All that's left is commodity marketing "  .
This is one end of the argument where the hoi polloi  perception of a writer is not really different from that of a mad scientist busy in his studies. Thus, a typical writer is perceived to be a recluse , who'd be busy creating art for art's sake.

But many writers , classical or contemporary ,were/ are social butterflies. The inspiration to Jane Austin's novels supposedly came from her exchange of letters with her sister where she articulated the dogma & hypocrisy of the so called high society ladies and lords . Shakespeare used to be an actor prior to becoming the greatest playwright of English literature. Most importantly, all of these intrepid persons (Bill Waterson included) undertook the perilous endeavor of articulating their ideas : which, linguistically speaking , makes them 'Entrepreneurs' .

Now , when it comes to the collaboration part , even though the writers took inspiration from stream of life floating around them , they often withdrew themselves from it when they were actually creating their masterpieces. But then , do we really collaborate in the true sense of the word even when we are actually surrounded by people ? Isn't empathic listening hailed as an inevitable prerequisite of collaboration ? But, we hardly listen to others when we're in a group. We  nod our head vigorously only to get the chance to speak out our own opinions . Thus , we remain full (fool?) of ourselves even when we're in a group. Au contraire , these writers delved deep into the psyche of the people even when they withdrew themselves from them . Thus the fictional ideas that seeded inside their brain found a base in the soil of keen understanding of human behavior : their hopes , fears and vulnerabilities . And only the collaboration of these seed and soil materialized into the elms , oaks & hawthorns of literature , metaphysics , popular fiction and  business essays. Besides , all of these writers were marketing maestros even if only for their sheer knowledge of human behavior. Thus from this angle , every writer is an entrepreneur .

On the other hand today's writing , much to the disappointment of Mr Waterson , is more about marketing effort & brand building than the content itself . Thus J K Rowling or Stephaie Meyer just don't tell fantasy tales. Besides telling , they also sell entire packages for their readers . Thus it'll be apt from every angle to call them entrepreneurs .
